Visayan Sea, Our Shared Responsibility
In the heart of the Visayas region is the Visayan Sea, alive and calling for our collective effort in conservation. A rich body of water straddling 3 administrative regions, 4 provinces, 22 municipalities and covering an area of 10, 000 km2. It is one of the most productive fishing grounds of the country owing to its pelagic fisheries resource. Abundant demersal and pelagic fishes caught in this body of water with a total of recorded of over 400 species. Our Visayan Sea is a vast repository of our natural heritage and habitat to indefinite number of organisms awaiting science for discovery. A strong leadership with a clear mandate to manage our fisheries, including comprehensive policies that wisely conserve the richness of the sea is a must. The Visayan Sea Governor’s Meeting held in Sicogon Island on July 22, 2017 focused on the management and protection of Visayan Sea . This year’s meeting tackled the management framework, institutional arrangements and fisheries law enforcement protocols for the Visayan Sea. The meeting convened our Governors, Mayors, non-government organizations and environmental advocates and National Government Agencies. BFAR take on the responsibility to lead the management of the waters beyond 15 kilometers municipal waters and in the preparation of management framework and plan for the Visayan Sea in collaboration with the Local Government Units and partner stakeholders. A Covenant of Commitment and Cooperation sealed our responsibility to manage and protect our Visayan Sea.
