ANTIQUE PROJECT TURNOVER AND FISHERFOLK FORUM
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Regional Office No. 6 successfully spearheaded the conduct of Antique Project Turnover and Fisherfolk Forum in San Jose, Antique. The activity delivered projects supported by Senator Loren Legarda which will aid in the protection and improvement of the condition of the fisheries resources and provide livelihood support to the fisherfolks in the coastal municipalities of the province. Fisheries projects that were turned-over include 15 units of 30-footer fiberglass boats worth 1.06 million, Community Fish Landing Center of LGU Anini-y amounting to 3 million, 230 units seaweed farm implements worth 2.8 million, 20 units post-harvest kits worth PhP 160,000.00, 10 units shallow water payaos worth PhP 300,000.00 and 2 units rain water collector worth PhP 140,000.00 The fisherfolk forum served as venue for direct interaction with the fisherfolk and communication of priority thrusts and programs of the government. Present during the forum were BFAR 6 headed by Regional Director Remia Aparri, Provincial Governor of Antique led by Hon. Rhodora Cadiao, Local Chief Executives and fisherolk representatives. Fisheries is the major industry of the Province of Antique. Of the 18 municipalities, 15 are coastal. It has a total of 24,119 registered fisherfolk which ranked third among 6 provinces of Region 6 and comprised 16% of the total registered fisherfolk of the region. The major fishing ground of the province is the Cuyo East Pass which extends to the Sulu Sea. The projects will support the productivity of the fisheries sector of the province. With strong support from the National Government and the Provincial and Municipal Government, fisheries will continuously be the major industry of Antique.
