Four out of five provinces surrounding the Visayan Sea has now crafted their Provincial Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) plan as the Province of Capiz recently concluded its planning and implementation workshop held on July 24 to 26, 2019 in Roxas City.
Reviving and strengthening inter-Local Government Unit Alliances, addressing commercial fishing encroachment in municipal waters, and updating and strict implementation of municipal fisheries ordinances (MFO) on zoning and delineation are among the major management actions identified by stakeholders and managers to kick-off the rolling out of the three-year EAFM plan of the province.
“Let us work hand in hand to bring back our marine environment to its once abundant condition so that marine life will not lose its home, our marine biodiversity will remain sustainable, and both the present and future generations will continue to benefit from our natural resource.”, urged Governor Esteban Evan B. Contreras in his speech delivered by his legal staff.
Cebu, scheduled to conduct their own EAFM planning and implementation workshop next month, will complete the five provinces surrounding the Visayan Sea with the EAFM plan including Masbate, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, and Capiz. The governors of the five provinces committed to jointly manage the Visayan Sea by adopting the EAFM plan during the 10th Governors’ Summit held October of the previous year.
This initiative is facilitated by BFAR regional Office 6 in order to ensure the smooth implementation of the joint management plan for the Visayan Sea as part of its mandate to spearhead the management of Fisheries Management Area (FMA) 11.
