DECLARATION OF FISHING SEASON FOR SARDINES, HERRINGS AND MACKERELS IN THE VISAYAN SEA
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Regional Field Office VI spearheaded the Declaration of the Fishing Season for Sardines, Herrings and Mackerels in the Visayan Sea held at Brgy. Pawa, Panay, Capiz on February 15, 2017. The activity was attended by the different Law Enforcement Agencies of Region 6 such as Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philippine Navy (PN), Iloilo Provincial Police Office (IPPO), Negros Occidental Provincial Public Safety Company (NOPPSC), Provincial Environment and Management Office (PEMO)-Neg. Occ., PNP Maritime Group, MCS 3004 personnel headed by CDR Roderik M. Elioran, PNP-Roxas, Local Government Units (LGU’s) of the different coastal municipalities covered by FAO 167-3, NFARMC representative, Media representatives, Commercial Fishing Vessel owners/operators, Fisherfolks of Brgy. Pawa, Panay, Capiz and BFAR personnel from Regions 5, 6, 7 and 8.
BFAR6 Regional Director Remia A. Aparri, in behalf of BFAR National Director Eduardo B. Gongona expressed her appreciation to all the participants for their support to the campaign against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUUF) activities. She discussed the importance of the Closed Season in the portion of the Visayan Sea to prevent growth overfishing and increase fish production in order to provide available and affordable food for the people. She also encouraged the LGU of Capiz to come up with a Task Force against IUUF. “We cannot do it alone, we need the support from the different stakeholders particularly the LGU’s and the members of the community to help conserve, protect and sustainably manage our marine resources”
