Negrense fisherfolk receives P6.9 million worth of projects Bacolod City - On September 28, 2017, the Department of Agriculture Secretary Emmanue F. Piñol holds its first biyaheng bukid program at the Municipality of Ilog and Bago City, Negros Occidental. Piñol awarded fisheries projects to include post-harvest kits, marine engines, fishing gears like crab pots and fish gill nets, fiberglass reinforced plastic boats and fish snack carts. P1 million for market development assistance was also turned over to the municipality of Pontevedra for the improvement of its fish market section. Likewise, Senator Loren Legarda as chair of the Senate Committee on Finance strongly supports the fisheries programs. Twenty-five units of 30-footer patrol boats with her funding support were turned over to coastal LGUs to strengthen the law enforcement activities in the province. During a multi-sectoral forum held in the Municipality of Ilog, Chief Agriculture committed to provide P30 million credit facility to farmers and fishers through the Production Loan Easy Access (PLEA) Program with only six percent interest per annum without collateral. Piñol instructed the BFAR as line bureau on the protection, conservation and management of fishery sector to take charge the requests of the fishermen. He committed to provide 50 units of fiberglass boats with engine and complete accessories per coastal municipality in Negros Occidental. Tilapia fingerlings distribution for the municipality of Isabela will also be provided. Request related to marine fishery reserve at Binalbagan and cold storage facility in Cadiz City are subject for validation. Secretary Piñol stressed five conditions to the beneficiaries of the fiberglass boats that the municipality should have no illegal fishing in the area, clean coastal area, declared closed fishing season, protected mangrove area and established marine sanctuary. These are the criteria for the national search of BFAR, the Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan or MMK. Piñol publicized the Search for Outstanding Coastal Community or (MMK) emphasizing the five criteria. Regional winner will received P6 million worth of fishery projects, P10 million for the 3rd national placer, P18 million for second and P30 million for the grand winner. He also urged the local government to participate on the said contest. Agriculture Secretary assured that there will be another biyaheng bukid to be held at the Negros Island. “This is not the first, I shall return. Do not waste what the government has given to you. I want to see changes in your lives after 2-3 years. And today is the start of that change in Region 6 area”, he said.
